Client Background and Product Challenge

The client was an emerging skincare brand from Finland focused on women aged 25–45 who value ingredient transparency, product performance, and more considered product choices. The brand wanted to strengthen its identity in the Nordic market through a customized face mask and foot mask range.

Its earlier products mainly delivered basic hydration. The new range needed a clearer reason to choose the brand, but the client’s own sampling had exposed several practical problems:

  • The face-mask sheet did not fit closely enough during use.
  • The essence needed stronger performance support and a more refined skin feel.
  • The foot-mask formula felt too thick and heavy.
  • Absorption was too slow and the after-feel was greasy.
  • The products lacked a distinctive Nordic ingredient identity.
  • The packaging did not yet reflect the brand’s sustainability direction.

The client also wanted the finished range to support efficacy claims with documented testing, obtain Vegan certification, and use packaging that delivered a measurable environmental improvement.

The challenge was not simply adding Nordic ingredients to standard mask formulas. Ingredient selection, formula performance, sheet fit, foot-mask texture, efficacy substantiation, certification, and packaging all needed to support one coherent brand experience.

Our Solution

Step 1: Building the Nordic Ingredient and Formula Direction

We began by defining an ingredient direction built around cloudberry, birch sap, and crowberry-derived ingredients. The objective was to make the Nordic identity part of the formula concept rather than use regional ingredients only as a marketing layer.

Our R&D team reviewed ingredient compatibility, concentration, texture, mildness, and the intended product claims while developing the face-mask essence and foot-mask formula. The work followed the same product-development logic described in our custom skincare formulation guide: the ingredient story, product brief, sensory target, and claim direction needed to remain aligned throughout sampling.

Because the client required efficacy substantiation, testing and supporting evidence were planned as part of development rather than added only after the formulas had been finalized.

Step 2: Improving Face-Mask Fit and Essence Performance

For the face masks, formula quality alone was not enough. The sheet material and essence had to work together so the finished product could deliver both the intended performance and a comfortable application experience.

We refined the sheet material, shape, facial coverage, adhesion, and essence loading while adjusting the formula for texture, skin feel, and the intended claims. Repeated sample evaluation helped improve fit and wearability without losing the product’s performance-focused positioning.

The final direction gave the client a face-mask experience that connected the Nordic ingredient concept with practical fit, a more refined essence feel, and documented performance support.

Step 3: Refining the Foot Mask and Sustainable Packaging

The foot-mask samples required a different development approach. The initial formula felt too thick, absorbed slowly, and left more residue than the client wanted.

We rebalanced the softening, moisturizing, and emollient system to improve spreadability, absorption, and after-feel while maintaining the richer care expected from a foot treatment. Several formula rounds were tested until the texture became lighter and more comfortable.

Packaging development ran in parallel. We selected bio-based packaging materials that supported the brand’s sustainability direction while remaining suitable for the finished products. The selected packaging achieved a documented 38% reduction in packaging carbon footprint.

For brands facing similar packaging decisions, our skincare packaging guide explains how material choice, product compatibility, functionality, and brand positioning need to be evaluated together.

The complete finished range also obtained Vegan certification, giving the client third-party support for an important part of its product positioning.

Development Summary

Development Area Main Focus Confirmed Outcome
Nordic Ingredient Direction Cloudberry, birch sap, and crowberry-derived ingredient positioning A clearer Arctic-inspired formula and brand identity
Face-Mask Development Sheet material, fit, adhesion, essence loading, and formula experience Improved fit and a more refined application experience
Foot-Mask Development Softening, moisturizing, absorption, and after-feel Lighter texture with reduced greasy residue
Efficacy Substantiation Testing and evidence for the intended product performance Documented support for the final claims direction
Vegan Certification Finished product range Vegan certification completed across the range
Sustainable Packaging Bio-based packaging materials Documented 38% reduction in packaging carbon footprint

The Result

After multiple rounds of formula, material, fit, and product testing, the final face and foot mask range better matched the client’s expectations for ingredient positioning, efficacy, wearability, texture, absorption, and overall product experience.

The project delivered:

  • A confirmed Nordic ingredient direction built around cloudberry, birch sap, and crowberry-derived ingredients
  • Improved sheet-mask fit and application comfort
  • A refined face-mask essence with documented efficacy support
  • A lighter foot-mask formula with improved absorption and after-feel
  • Efficacy substantiation for the intended product performance
  • Vegan certification across the finished range
  • Bio-based packaging with a documented 38% lower packaging carbon footprint
  • A clearer Arctic-inspired product identity for the brand

The result was more than a change in ingredients. The client gained a mask collection in which formula performance, product format, certification, packaging, and Nordic ingredient storytelling supported the same brand direction.

What Similar Clients Can Learn

  • Takeaway 1: Local Ingredients Need More Than a Marketing Story
Regional ingredients can strengthen brand identity, but they still need to work within stable formulas and deliver the intended texture, performance, and application experience.
  • Takeaway 2: Face-Mask Performance Depends on Both Formula and Sheet Design
Essence quality alone is not enough. Material, fit, adhesion, liquid loading, and after-feel all influence how a sheet mask performs in real use.
  • Takeaway 3: Foot Masks Need Careful Texture Balance
Rich softening and moisturizing systems can become heavy or greasy if the formula is not balanced correctly. Product structure matters as much as ingredient selection.
  • Takeaway 4: Sustainability Claims Need Measurable Product Decisions
Certification, packaging materials, and environmental claims are stronger when they are planned during development and supported by documented evidence rather than added after production.
