Client Background and Product Challenge
The client was an emerging men’s grooming brand from the UAE with experience in the Middle Eastern market. Its target customers were men aged 25–40 looking for a more premium and distinctive beard-care experience.
The client’s original products mainly provided basic moisturization. They lacked a clear fragrance identity and did not offer enough product differentiation for the positioning the brand wanted to build.
Earlier samples also revealed several practical problems:
Fragrance profiles felt flat and lacked depth
Textures felt too greasy and heavy
Absorption was too slow in warm conditions
Beard and skin after-feel needed improvement
The products lacked a recognizable regional identity
Halal requirements needed to be considered during development
The client understood its target market, but needed stronger product-development support to turn basic beard moisturization into a more complete grooming experience.
The project therefore needed to connect beard conditioning, lightweight application, fragrance identity, regional positioning, and compliance requirements rather than treating them as separate tasks.
Our Solution
Step 1: Defining the Beard Care Experience
We began by clarifying the product experience the client wanted to create.
The development direction focused on four priorities:
Lightweight beard conditioning
Comfortable application in a hot climate
A distinctive fragrance identity
Premium positioning suitable for the UAE men’s grooming market
The goal was not simply to make the products richer or more fragranced. The formula needed to condition the beard without leaving an excessively oily or coated feel, while the fragrance needed enough structure to become a recognizable part of the product experience.
Step 2: Refining the Formula and Texture
The earlier samples felt too greasy and absorbed too slowly, so we reviewed the overall oil and emollient balance rather than simply reducing individual ingredients.
The development team worked with lightweight oil and conditioning options such as jojoba oil, argan oil, and grapeseed oil, adjusting their balance within the formula to improve spreadability and after-feel.
The formula work focused on:
Reducing excessive greasiness
Improving spreadability
Supporting faster absorption
Maintaining beard softness and conditioning
Improving the feel on the skin beneath the beard
Creating a more comfortable finish for regular use
This allowed the product to retain its conditioning role while moving closer to the lighter grooming experience the client wanted.
Step 3: Developing the Signature Fragrance Direction
Fragrance was another major part of the project.
Instead of relying on a generic masculine scent, we developed a fragrance direction inspired by familiar Gulf preferences, including oud, amber, and saffron-inspired notes.
The fragrance was refined through multiple rounds to improve:
Opening impression
Heart-note character
Base-note depth
Transition between fragrance stages
Overall balance
Fit with the brand’s premium positioning
The objective was not simply to increase fragrance intensity, but to create a more layered and recognizable scent profile.
Formula and fragrance were evaluated together because the complete beard-care experience depended on how the product spread, absorbed, conditioned the beard, and developed aromatically after application.
Formula and Fragrance Refinement Summary
| Refinement Area | What We Found | What We Adjusted |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance Structure | Initial scent felt flat and lacked depth | Reworked the opening, heart, and base-note structure |
| Fragrance Identity | The scent lacked a clear connection with the intended brand positioning | Developed an oud-, amber-, and saffron-inspired fragrance direction |
| Texture | Earlier samples felt greasy and heavy | Rebalanced the oil and emollient system |
| Absorption | Product absorbed too slowly in warm conditions | Improved spreadability and reduced the heavy after-feel |
| Beard Feel | Conditioning experience needed improvement | Refined the moisturizing and conditioning balance |
| Product Differentiation | Existing products offered mainly basic moisturization | Connected fragrance, texture, and beard-care performance into a clearer premium concept |
Halal requirements were also considered during ingredient selection, formula development, and production planning, with support provided for the client’s intended compliance pathway.
The Result
After multiple rounds of formula, fragrance, and product-experience refinement, the final samples better matched the client’s expectations for beard conditioning, lightweight application, fragrance identity, and premium positioning.
The project delivered:
A confirmed signature fragrance direction
A more layered and recognizable scent profile
A lighter and less greasy texture
Improved spreadability and absorption
Better beard softness and manageability
A more comfortable skin and beard after-feel
A clearer premium identity for the UAE market
Approved samples ready for the next production stage
A product-development direction aligned with the intended Halal requirements
Instead of relying only on basic moisturizing benefits, the client gained a beard-care concept built around conditioning performance, fragrance identity, and a lighter grooming experience.
What Similar Clients Can Learn
Takeaway 1: Beard Care Requires More Than Basic Moisturization
Beard products also need to consider hair feel, manageability, absorption, fragrance, and the experience on the skin beneath the beard.Takeaway 2: Hot-Climate Products Need Careful Texture Design
Conditioning oils can support softness and manageability, but the complete formula still needs to spread easily and avoid an excessively greasy or coated finish.Takeaway 3: Regional Fragrance Identity Should Be Designed, Not Assumed
Familiar fragrance references such as oud, amber, and saffron can support regional positioning, but balance, structure, and note progression still require careful development.Takeaway 4: Formula and Fragrance Should Be Tested Together
A premium beard-care product is experienced as one system. Application, absorption, beard feel, skin feel, and fragrance development all influence the final impression.
